The agency started out in 1963 as the Industrial Research Unit in the Economic Development Board. It became the Singapore Institute of Standards and Industrial Research (SISIR) in 1969 to enhance its role to promote quality amongst local manufacturers and offer them technical assistance and consultancy. In 1973, SISIR became an independent statutory board with the passing of the Standards and Industrial Research Bill to help it carry out its functions with greater efficiency.

This logo is an update from what the agency started with in 1969. It was updated again in 1986.
