The logo features the initials of Singapore's national radio and television broadcaster. The design combined two of the best entries out of 662 received in a design competition. While the "R" and "T" came from a design by Loh Hong Liat, the "S" they are imposed on was created by Lawrence Wong.

A new logo was needed because of the introduction of colour television which rendered the previous logo unusable.
