The 15-storey hotel officially opened in September 1971. It was first announced with much fanfare in 1968 when it was launched with a sales of shares. With the S$10-million hotel near completion by end 1970, the board of directors began looking at the feasibility of converting the 321-room hotel into a hospital instead. This idea was eventually rejected.
In 1972, the hotel teamed up with Ramada Inns, an American hotel chain. The partnership lasted until the late 1970s. The hotel's interior design and decoration was done by Prichan Khoonprasert, a graduate of the Bangkok University of Fine Arts.
