When this establishment first opened in 1953, it was known as the Embassy Hotel and touted to be Malaya's biggest hotel. The five-storey building had 60 bedrooms, including 12 air-conditioned ones, topped with a dining room the top. It also offered views of the nearby Katong Park and the sea from its many verandahs. The building was opened by the descendants of the late Lim Ah Eng, who were known for opening a chain of hotels.
In 1960, the establishment was taken over by a new management and renamed the Ambassador Hotel. Over the years, the building was damaged by several incidents. It was damaged in 1963 by two bombs that exploded at the Katong Park some 36 metres across it. A fire in 1972 gutted the top floor of the six-storey building, which was said to be "one of the liveliest night spots in Katong" then.
The building also underwent ownership changes again from the 1980s. It was first sold in 1982 to hotelier Teo Lay Swee, who subsequently owned Cockpit Hotel, who renamed it Duke Hotel. It was then sold in 1992 to developers from Macau and renamed Katong Park Hotel. It was then sold again in 1994 to property developer Tan Hock Keng. Five years later, the hotel ceased operations and was put up for sale. It was subsequently redeveloped to a condominium, The View@Meyer.
