This art gallery in the National Museum was officially opened on 21 August 1976. The colourful cover design—which also appeared on a catalogue—was said to symbolise "the birth of a new culture through the fusion of different cultures".

It was designed by Choy Weng Yang, the head of the museum's exhibition and design unit.
