The "world's largest hotel chain" officially opened its first branch in Singapore in March 1974. It was also the first in Southeast Asia. Located along Scotts Road, the 600-room hotel was also home to the largest Metro departmental store. The hotel was taken over by the Goodwood Group by December 1974 and was briefly renamed Parklane Hotel. A management contract dispute between Goodwood and Holiday Inns of American ran on for several years before it was settled out of court. In 1983, the Sultan of Brunei bought over the hotel and renamed it the Royal Holiday Inn Hotel.
