In 1973, Singapore's biggest and oldest food and beverage manufacturer, Fraser & Neave, opened a restaurant complex inside the National Stadium in 1973. It consisted of the Champion's Kitchen coffeehouse, the Olympic cocktail lounge and a Chinese restaurant, 新運樓.
The complex's interior decor was by Johnny Johnson. The 450-seater Chinese restaurant serving Cantonese fare had a dance floor and interiors were decorated with lamps and decorations in the traditional Chinese style. as well as paintings of "Tai Chi" figures. The kitchen was reportedly constructed by Singaporean craftsmen from local materials.
