This first day cover features the Singapore Indoor Stadium which officially opened on 31 December 1989. It is located in Kallang and was part of a plan to turn the area along the mouth of the Kallang River into a sports and leisure complex.
It was designed by Japanese architect Kenzo Tange who worked with local architects Raglan Squire and Partners. Its majestic roof was said to combine modern technology in a form typical of traditional temple architecture found in Asia. Its sweeping form also bears similarities to Tange's design for Tokyo's Yoyogi National Stadium built for the 1964 Olympics.
