The union was formed by the restructuring of the Singapore Industrial Labour Organisation (SILO) and the Pioneer Industries Employees' Union (PIEU) in 1981. The logo is made up of shapes resembling cutting tools, ball bearings and symmetrical blocks that together symbolise metal, while the red colour and its bold and compact structure represents the brotherhood and strength of the union respectively.
