In April 1985, a group 13 designers in Singapore formed the Designers Association of Singapore (DAS) to champion the rights of the profession. As the members came from different disciplines, it was the first multidisciplinary design association covering the fields of fashion, industrial design, graphic and interior design.
In the third year of the DAS, it began to publish a regular magazine called Designer to keep its members informed of its activities. The first issue launched in July 1988 was a four-page publication. While its masthead and format came from Sylvia Tan of Viscom Design Associations, the publication layout was developed and put together by graphic designer Ransome Chua.
Designer later developed into a full-fledged magazine for the public in 2001. DAS was rebranded the Design Business Chamber Singapore in 2012.
