In 1977, the Singapore Commercial Art Society organised an exhibition from 2 to 8 December at the Nation Museum Art Gallery to mark its 40th anniversary. The catalogue compiles the works showcased at the exhibition as well as documents the society's efforts in advancing the interests and standards of commercial art in Singapore.
The society was formed in 1937 as the Singapore Art Advertisement Institution by various local commercial artists. Its first premises was at 1 Kreta Ayer Road and later moved to 73 Neil Road two years later. After World War II, the society renamed itself as the Singapore Commercial Art Institute. It changed its name again in 1960 under the advice of the Registrar of Societies.
