The 600-room hotel was started in the 1960s on the hilltop nearly Oxley Rise. It was run by India's Oberoi Hotels and boasted Singapore's largest covered hotel carpark.

In 1977, Hind Hotels bought the hotel from Imperial Securities International. Oberoi eventually terminated its management contract in 1988 and the hotel was renamed Hotel Imperial Singapore.
